Press Release Eden Camp: |
20th May 1996
£41.75 MILLION
£41.75 Million. That's how much less we have spent, than the recently opened Armouries Museum, in creating our latest and worthy addition to Eden Camp.
Not only did we spend that much less, what we spent was our own money!
The new area will be fully open for the forthcoming Bank Holiday weekend and includes displays dedicated to all those people who lived through, and died, during the Second World War.
We are here because one man, Mr. Stan Johnson invested his savings in a dream, a dream that no one else had faith in.
Ten years on, we are a force to be reckoned with, comparable, if not better that most other attractions or museums within the country. It has been achieved through resourcefulness and without subsidies from Council, Government or other bodies.
We have achieved our end result on our own.
We have not, as yet, had any official opening to the Museum, we have been waiting for the right time when all the huts of the Former World War Two Prisoner of War Camp were occupied.
That time is now here
Now, here is the crunch, can we get a royal opening like everyone else, like the Forty Two Million pound museum?
Not a chance! Not even a well done, sorry but no!
We pay Rates, VAT, Income Tax, National Insuracne, Numerous Licences, Corporation Tax etc. We generate a lot of local income. We have transformed a derelict blot on the landscape, helping to place Malton, North Yorkshire on the map.
We employ between thirty to sixty people, depending upon the time of year.
In fact, between the Museum and Mr. Johnson's other business, his inpute is over £750,000 into the Tax system.
We work hard, we pay our way, we subsidise the likes of the Forty Two Million pound museum, and in return, what encouragement do we get?
NOTHING!!!
How can private concerns like ourselves, compete with the non-profitable museums who reveive handouts from the Government and/or the Lottery, and who do not pay VAT, and do not pay rates, and who then command all the available Royal opening times.
Notwithstanding the above frustrations, we shall continue to strive for excellence, and we shall continue to improve, despite the unfair advantage given to our head in the sand ,so called, proper museums.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Museum if you require any further details on our meagre £250,000 investment.
