NEW BOOK ON NORTHERN IRELANDS' ONLY NAVY VC JAMES MAGENNIS TO BE LAUNCHED AT EDEN CAMP MODERN HISTORY THEME MUSEUM

The launch of a new book abour Northern Irelands' only Naval VC of WWII James (Mick) Magennis, takes place at EDEN CAMP on Sunday 26th April 1998 from 2.00pm. The author, George Fleming an ex-submariner and native of belfast, has written the life story of Magennis as part of his campaign for recognition and lasting memorial to Northern Irelands' only Naval Victoria Cross winner.

The book documents Magennis' early life in Belfast and his escape from poverty by joining the Royal Navy in 1935, leading on to his service during WWII. The book is packed with adventure and documents his part in the history of the war at sea.

Magennis won his VC while serving in Midget Submarines. He left the submerged Midget X-Craft Submaring in a diving suit to plant mines under a Japanesse cruiser.

The latter part of the book explores his return to Belfast where the political and religious problems forced Magennis and his family to leave the city. Magennis died in Bradford, England in obscurity in 1986.

George Fleming, a distinguished artist, an ex-submariner and a native of Belfast. This is his first book.
