PRESS RELEASE ASAP

R.A.F. Bomb Disposal National Memorial to be unveiled at Eden Camp

On Saturday 29th September 2001, Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum will be hosting a reunion of the R.A.F. Bomb Disposal Association. The reunion has been organised to coincide with the unveiling of a National Memorial dedicated to those members of RAF Bomb Disposal who have been killed or injured whilst carrying out their duties since 1939. A former RAF Flight Sergeant, Fred Knox from Carlisle, who was involved in bomb disposal has been one of the main fundraisers for the memorial which has been paid for through donations.

The members of the RAF Bomb Disposal Association decided that they wanted their National Memorial to be built where it would be seen by as many people as possible, rather than it be placed in a church or town/city memorial garden. They also wanted a location where a photographic and textual display could be mounted to explain the role of RAF Bomb Disposal. As Eden Camp is fairly central to British Isles, and receives approximately 270,000 visitors a year, they thought that our museum would be an ideal location. It goes without saying that we were delighted to be paid such a compliment and are honoured to have a memorial dedicated to such a brave group of men within our museum.

The museum has worked with a local building firm and stone mason to ensure that the memorial is ready for it's official unveiling on the 29th.

The unveiling and dedication of the memorial will take place at 1.00pm on the 29th. We are expecting between 150 - 200 veterans of RAF Bomb Disposal to attend, admission to the museum is free to all those who served (or are still serving) with RAF Bomb Disposal since 1939.

Members of Ryedale's R.A.F.A, and A.T.C. will also be in attendance. Malton White Star Band will be providing the music.
