Press Release Eden Camp: |
14th February 1994
RECYCLING, THE GREEN ISSUE, BACK TO BASICS, IT'S NOTHING NEW!!!
Eden Camp reopens for the new season on 14th February 1994 and as always we are looking forward to another successful season.
A major new exhibit depicting the resourcefulness and morale of a fighting nation for survival will also open on that date.
New for 1994, the visitor will be able to walk through a street where the Boy Scouts are busy collecting scrap steel for the War Effort, the Girl Guides are collecting aluminium pots and pans for Spitfires. The ladies of the WVS man the collection point for waste food, waste rags and waste bones, whilst the men are busy collecting waste paper. Around the corner a workman is hard at work cutting down the iron railings. The familiar sight of the Air Raid Warden stands outside his shelter whilst his colleague mans the stand pipe issuing the precious drinking water.
All along the street quotations of the British humour shine through, signs like "More open than usual", "Gone with the wind" and "You can break our buildings but you won't break our spirits".
So, as said earlier, there's nothing new. 50 years ago we were being green, recycling etc., as with so many other things though, such as equality of women, once the war was over it was all forgotten, waiting to be rediscovered yet again.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Museum if you require any further details.
