Eden Camp:

6th October 1991

DOOM, GLOOM, RECESSION AND THE TOURIST INDUSTRY

All we seem to hear and read over the last few months are the different sectors of the tourist industry, mainly Museums, explain away that they have had a bad year due to :- Recession, Gulf War and the poor weather earlier on in the year.

At the end of the first week in September, EDEN CAMP matched the whole of the previous years figures. With 4.5 months still to go, two months of which are booked up with schools to our capacity of 400 children per day, we feel it is only fair to say that 1991 has been yet again another record year.

We are, as a privately owned museum, exempt from most of the Museum award schemes, Museum registration schemes and from the local Museums council. We still have no signposting in the Malton courtesy of the understanding County Council. Despite all these closed doors we got on with doing our job in our own little but very sucessful way.

Why do all these other Museums etc., the majority of whom receive subsidies, grants, rate payers money etc., feel they are owed a living. Surely a good hard look at the product and their closed shop attitude is required.

We also advise you with much regret that we are not renewing our membership this year with the Yorkshire and Humberside Tourist Board. This is as a protest at them increasing their annual fees from £80.00 to £278.00, i.e. just under 250%. So much for their help and understanding to the tourist industry.

Notwithstanding the above we shall carry on giving our customers what they request:- "Good value for money." EDEN CAMP continues to move forward in the nineties.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Museum if you require any further details.
