Italian Charioteers.

Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum was originally built in 1942 by the Italian Prisoners of War that had been captured by our forces.

Within our Chapel we have a cross carved by an Italian POW made from a Red Cross packing case.

Now a new link has been formed with the recent arrival of the underwater Chariots, The Human Torpedo.

The first Human Torpedo's used in war, were those of the Italian Navy against the allies. They were very successful; Churchill wanted a similar craft as he could see there immense potential. Our designers set about developing the British equivalent.

When Italy capitulated the Italian Navy and the British worked together to further the design of the British craft, which ultimately carried out many daring raids.

In honour of the Italians, and to compliment our display we shall be unveiling a plaque dedicated to the men who served in their underwater operations. Admiral Campreger the Italian Naval Attaché to Great Britain will unveil the plaque on 9th October 1999 at 12 noon.

Should you require further details please contact Mr Robert Hobson of the Underwater Heritage Trust (Tel 0181 467 8656) or myself.
