PALESTINE PRESS RELEASE 20TH OCTOBER 2001

In 1948 British Forces left the trouble-strewn country of Palestine, the mandate ending on May 14th. Between 1945 and 1948, over 90,000 military personnel served in Palestine. Some were veterans of WWII, other raw recruits undergoing their National Service. Around seven hundred British service men and women were killed during the three years - victims of the impossible situation created between Jew and Arab. Due to the complex political and religious arguments which were associated with the whole Palestine affair, this particular 'conflict' was never publicised as other, often lesser, conflicts were.

In 1999 an ex Royal Artillery Gunner from Yeovil called Gerry Burr contacted us. He had heard that we had created a new exhibition dedicated to post 1945 conflicts and wondered whether we had covered Palestine. We had, and with Gerry's help we hosting the first reunion of Palestine Veterans in October of the same year. As a result of that first reunion we have established an Association of Palestine Veterans which is administered from the museum and which has a current membership of some 665 men and women.

Eden Camp will be holding its third reunion of Palestine Veterans on Saturday 20th October 2001. There will be a 'form-up' of veterans and informal service in front of our Cenotaph at 1.00pm. The museum will be open at 10.00am as normal and admission is free to Palestine Veterans and their wives/husbands/partners.

We are expecting between 250-300 veterans to attend this unique event.

If you require further details regarding this event please do not hesitate to contact us on the address/telephone no./e-mail below.
